So You Want to Be a Government Contractor? Here’s What You Need to Know

February 02, 20231 min read

The government contracting process can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.

With a little preparation and the right guidance, you can navigate the process like a pro. Here’s what you need to know to get started as a government contractor.

  • First, you need to obtain a Universal Entity Identifier (UEI) number from the System for Award Management. This twelve-digit number uniquely identifies your business and is required for many government contracts.

  • Once you have your UEI number, you can begin searching for contracting opportunities on the System for Award Management website. This website lists all current contracting opportunities with the federal government.

  • When you find an opportunity that aligns with your business's strengths, you'll need to submit a proposal in order to be considered for the contract. The proposal evaluation process can take several months, so again, make sure you plan ahead accordingly.

  • If your proposal is successful and you are awarded the contract, congratulations! You are now officially a government contractor.

The government contracting process may seem daunting at first, but with a little preparation and guidance, it doesn’t have to be. By following the steps outlined above, you can become a government contractor in no time.
